On 5 March, the International School of Bucharest (ISB) became a hub of creativity and innovation as students from Years 4–13 showcased their talents at the school rounds of the firSTep Science & Technology Competition. The event brought together over 210 students presenting more than 90 projects across a wide spectrum of scientific fields, including biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, engineering, and technology.
The exhibition was a vibrant celebration of curiosity and problem-solving. Visitors to the school gallery were treated to an impressive array of experiments, designs, and innovations, with students confidently explaining the inspiration, methodology, and solutions behind their work. For Upper Primary students, the fair featured 36 projects by over 70 students, while older students contributed 58 projects involving approximately 140 participants, highlighting the breadth of talent across the school.
A distinguishing feature of this year’s competition was the strong focus on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Students were encouraged to link their projects to real-world challenges such as climate change, clean energy, environmental protection, health, and sustainable cities. This approach not only promoted scientific inquiry but also fostered critical thinking about the social, ethical, and environmental impact of their work, bridging science with global citizenship.
Beyond scientific exploration, the competition allowed students to hone valuable skills including experimental design, data collection and analysis, teamwork, communication, and presentation abilities. Many students worked collaboratively, navigating challenges and refining their ideas, demonstrating creativity, perseverance, and a passion for learning.
The firSTep Science & Technology Competition continues to be an inspiring platform for ISB students to explore their curiosity, showcase innovative thinking, and engage with global issues that shape our shared future. The school community applauds all participants for their dedication, enthusiasm, and impressive achievements.
