Reading for Pleasure • Learning to Read AND Reading to Learn • Building Meaning
As part of National Storytelling Week, our Primary School hosted a series of engaging activities designed to celebrate reading and storytelling, bringing together pupils, parents, and staff from across the school community.
Throughout the week, a wide range of activities took place both during lessons and beyond the classroom, creating meaningful opportunities for children to explore stories, develop literacy skills, and nurture a lifelong love of reading. A key highlight of the programme was the muchenjoyed Reading Breakfast, which provided a welcoming space for families to learn and connect.
The workshops were thoughtfully structured to support different stages of a child’s reading journey and were delivered in two dedicated sessions:
Lower Primary Session – This session focused on early reading skills, storytelling, and phonics. It was aimed at parents of children in FS0, FS1, FS2, Year 1, and Year 2, offering practical guidance on how to support early literacy development at home.
Upper Primary Session – This session explored what counts as reading, with a strong emphasis on reading for pleasure, learning to read and reading to learn, and building meaning. Parents of children in Years 3–6 gained valuable insights into supporting comprehension, fluency, and deeper engagement with texts.
We extend our sincere thanks to our Year 3 teacher, Mr Anthony Moore, for organising such a successful and inspiring week of events, as well as to all the parents who took the time to attend and actively participate. Together, we continue to strengthen our shared commitment to literacy and learning.
