Editor’s note

I recently listened to a fascinating podcast with Michael Easter, author of The Comfort Crisis, where he discussed how to grow by doing hard things. He described Misogi, a Japanese purification practice that involves confronting discomfort and uncertainty to uncover one’s true potential.
It made me think about how schools embody this very idea. Schools are our first “exploration grounds,” where every new experience feels challenging at first: the first day of school, the first residential trip away from parents, choosing homework over play, preparing for very important exams, or stepping on stage for a performance. Submitting a project for a notorious science competition, volunteering to help others, or leading an initiative for the environment—these are all “hard things” that shape resilience and growth.

Here at ISB, we are proud to provide such opportunities. What amazes me most is how often our students meet these challenges with joy and excitement. Beyond the joy of learning lies another joy—the joy of celebrating achievements together. Whether it’s a perfect IB score, a university placement, success in the NASA Space Settlement Contest, or victories in sports, these moments remind us that schools are more than places of learning; they are places where young people shape the world.
