He graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University School of Theatre and University of Leeds and he has 23 years of teaching experience, including 6 at ISB. When asked about what teaching Drama is all about, he replied:

"Ever seen a 'Wet Paint' sign on something? Did you read it and walk away? Of course you didn't - you touched it to see if it was still wet. You're only human. Well that's Drama: sometimes reading just isn't enough. We need to experience."

Teodora Varzaru
Art Teacher
Teodora Varzaru
Art Teacher

Teodora joined the High School of Arts in Bucharest (Nicolae Tonitza) on the advice of an encouraging art teacher. She was still too young to realize it would be the best thing ever to happen to her. Afterwards, inspired by her teacher’s faith in her and trying not to disappoint, she won first prize at the National Olympics of Visual Arts and Architecture and entered the National University of Arts in Bucharest, despite her family’s wishes for her to become a doctor.

Still not believing in the prospects of this becoming a “real job” she also graduated from the National School of Political and Administrative Studies and gained a BA in both courses, followed by a Masters in Sculpture. Her path was now clear. With that experience, she realised that art is not ‘that thing you do when you’re failing math’ and she was now doing it after discovering she couldn’t live without it.

For a while she was the President of the Students Union at the National University of Arts, where she organized several exhibitions and artistic events.

Later, she experienced work on TV sets, creating the scenography for several productions. By this time, she had acquired her own studio and was exhibiting works both nationally and internationally. This proved to be less fun than she’d hoped for so she decided to get a ‘real job’. She discovered her passion for working with children in several after-school sessions outside Bucharest, undertaking volunteer work and teaching art to disadvantaged and disabled children. At the same time, she started working for “Fundatia Calea Victoriei” where she inspired a joy of art into the lives of adults who had missed it during school, or had it stifled by dull teachers.

She started teaching at ISB with the intention of introducing the pleasures of art into Monday morning lessons and turning them into a fun adventure, geared towards helping students discover who they really are.

Collaborative actress at Ion Creanga Theatre in Bucharest, Ms. Cristina Purici is licensed in Performing Arts and holds a Master degree in Alternative Pedagogies and Theatrical Art in Education at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Studies, The University of Bucharest.

In her three years experience in teaching preschool and primary students, followed by two years teaching secondary KS3 students, Ms. Cristina searched for an approach that stimulate the way on how children think so that they can understand what they study and how to apply the knowledge in their future grown-up life.

"The desire of giving students a different type of activity came from the need of comprehending the essence of what the children learn in school in a time when computerization is the most effective process for performing the tasks. The importance of creativity in school is known to be responsible for success in academic development. Drama stimulates imagination and increases enthusiasm. Through Drama, students adapt to different situations by developing intuition and memory, forming the concrete and critical thinking. Drama activities lead to educating emotional intelligence.”
